Vienna Travel and Transport: Photo of horse and carriage rideA vast city with a choice of different transport options, operated by Verkehrsverbund Ostregion (VOR), means that you will never find it difficult to travel to your chosen destination, whatever the time of day. Vienna is home to an enormous network of bus and tram transport, with its immense tram system actually being the third-biggest of its kind in existence.

Much of central Vienna is simple to travel around on foot and this is a great way to enjoy a spot of sightseeing and shopping, stopping for refreshments on the way. Speedy underground and suburban train transport is also on hand, being known as the U-Bahn and S-Bahn systems respectively, along with plenty of taxis.

Vienna International Airport is located within the south-easterly suburb of Schwechat, around 16 km / 10 miles from the city centre itself. The airport is known locally as the Wien Schwechat Airport and is the busiest in the whole of Austria, seeing well over 14 million travellers passing through its gates every single year. City Airport trains, S-Bahn trains and 24-hour bus transport all provide travel into central Vienna. The most notable airlines serving the three terminals include Austrian Arrows, Austrian Airlines, LTU Austria, Lufthansa, Niki, Scandinavian Airlines, SkyEurope and Turkish Airlines.

The majority of all Austrian Autobahns (motorways) either start or finish within the city of Vienna. These fast roads usually require a Highway Toll Sticker (Vignette) and these can be bought from all fuel stations. Most parking spaces in Vienna's central 'Gürtel' region (districts 1 to 9) are clearly marked and usually restricted to two hours between the hours of 09:00 and 22:00 on weekdays. Parking tickets can be purchased at tobacco shops, or alternatively, longer, more expensive car parks are available, along with an inexpensive park and ride service, travelling from U-Bahn stations on the city outskirts.

Public bus and tram transport is actually so frequent that the need for timetables becomes almost unnecessary.

Most bus services tend to stop at around midnight, although a reduced night service is available for those heading back after hours. Buses also travel to and from Vienna International Airport every 30 minutes, linking Morzinplatz and the main train stations.

The city has become a leading rail hub and simple to reach by train transport throughout Europe. Many overnight trains regularly travel into Vienna from as far afield as Amsterdam, Berlin, Moscow, Prague and even Rome. Both suburban (S-Bahn) trains and underground (U-Bahn) trains are available, with all of the main train routes being clearly detailed within the free city map provided by the tourist office. Worth noting, both European and Austrian train passes are only valid when travelling on Vienna's S-Bahn trains.
